Quantum Technology Laboratories (qtlabs) is a Vienna-based spinout from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, founded in 2017 by Dr. Thomas Scheidl, Dr. Fabian Steinlechner, and Dr. Rupert Ursin to commercialize research in optical and quantum space communication. It is the only company developing telescopes with quantum receivers and satellite tracking software for unbreakable quantum communication. The company specializes in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems for both terrestrial networks and satellites. Its customers include the EU Commission, satellite companies, and critical infrastructure operators, and it also provides consulting services and concept studies for quantum communication applications. Qtlabs has more than 30 employees and won the PHOENIX Spin-off Award 2023 from Austria Wirtschaftsservice. In 2023 it joined a group of European collaborators developing a global quantum internet enabled from space.
