About

The Open Quantum Institute (OQI) is a multilateral governance initiative launched in March 2024 to promote global and inclusive access to quantum computing and to develop applications for the benefit of humanity. It is hosted by CERN during its 2024 to 2026 pilot phase and was incubated by GESDA, the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator. OQI operates as a science diplomacy instrument, bringing together research institutions, diplomacy, the private sector, and philanthropy. The institute works around four core pillars: Accelerating Applications for Humanity, which develops quantum use cases aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals; Access for All, which provides global, equitable cloud-based access to quantum computers and simulators; Advancing Capacity Building, which creates educational resources for worldwide participation in quantum development; and Activating Multilateral Governance, which establishes a neutral forum for shaping quantum computing governance. OQI is supported by UBS and partners with Google, IBM, QWorld, and academic institutions worldwide. It emphasizes inclusivity across all nations, open science practices, a focus on societal impact, independence from agendas, and international collaboration. The African Quantum Consortium is a member organization of OQI, reflecting the institute's commitment to global quantum ecosystem development.
