About

The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is the UK's flagship quantum computing research facility, established in 2020 at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire as part of the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme. With a team of more than 80 staff, it brings together quantum researchers, industry partners, and government agencies. Its Programme Oversight Board includes EPSRC and STFC members. The NQCC provides access to a range of quantum computing platforms, supports collaboration between academia and industry, develops quantum software and applications, and acts as a central hub for the UK's quantum computing ecosystem. Hardware installed at the NQCC includes an Infleqtion 100-qubit neutral atom system from March 2026, a Quantum Motion silicon CMOS qubit system from September 2025, an ORCA Computing PT-2 photonic processor, and a Nu Quantum trapped-ion quantum networking laboratory. The SparQ programme, formerly QCAP, is the centre's main user engagement initiative, offering UK researchers and industry access to quantum computing systems. SparQ Access opens for academic proposals each quarter, with the Q1 2026 round closing on 5 January 2026 for a February to April 2026 access period. In February 2026, 15 SparQ Proof of Concept projects were awarded, including an STFC Cross Cluster cohort focused on the energy sector. In December 2025, the NQCC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the QCi3 Hub at the University of York Quantum Communications Hub, deepening collaboration between the quantum computing and communications communities. On 12 December 2025, it announced a Google Quantum AI collaboration giving UK researchers access to Google's Willow processor under the UK-US Technology Prosperity Deal. In February 2026, the NQCC published its Responsible and Ethical Quantum Computing Action Plan, setting out a framework for ethical governance of quantum computing research and deployment. On 17 March 2026, Chancellor Rachel Reeves vi
