About

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's national measurement institute, founded in 1900 and located in Teddington, southwest London. NPL plays a central role across the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, providing measurement science, expert guidance, and facilities that help industry and researchers develop quantum products with confidence. The Quantum Metrology Institute (QMI) at NPL combines quantum research with time and frequency research, housing over 50 internationally recognised researchers focused on quantum development. NPL's Measurement for Quantum (M4Q) programme gives UK businesses access to NPL quantum scientists and research facilities at no charge to support the development and validation of quantum technologies. Research areas span quantum materials, quantum sensors for gravity, inertial forces, and magnetic field measurements, quantum computing, quantum communications and networking, quantum electrical metrology for the SI units of current, voltage, and resistance, and characterisation and imaging of materials at nano to atomic scale. NPL develops test and evaluation capabilities for quantum products and contributes to standardisation and supply chain development for the quantum sector. NPL is sponsored by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and managed by UKRI. It serves as the UK's primary reference point for quantum measurement standards and contributes to international quantum metrology through collaboration with peer institutions including NIST in the USA, PTB in Germany, and BIPM. Update 2025-07-09: NPL successfully trapped its first ions in its new ion trap, providing a stable platform for quantum computing development.
