About
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, known as Berkeley Lab, is a United States national laboratory founded on August 26, 1931. It is located in Berkeley, California, and operated by the University of California for the Department of Energy. Berkeley Lab leads the Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA), one of five DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Centers, which brings together 80 researchers from 15 partner institutions. QSA works to co-design algorithms, quantum devices, and engineering solutions that deliver certified quantum advantage in scientific applications. The laboratory conducts quantum computing research across quantum processors, quantum algorithms, quantum networking, quantum sensors, and quantum materials, and operates quantum computing testbeds and advanced characterization facilities for quantum hardware development. It collaborates with universities, industry, and government agencies, advancing quantum computing for energy, chemistry, materials science, and national security. Update 2026-05-28: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is advancing quantum networks by deploying industry components to its QUANT-NET testbed.
