About
Hitachi Ltd. is a major Japanese multinational conglomerate founded in 1910 and headquartered in Tokyo. It develops quantum computing technologies including CMOS annealing and gate-type quantum computers. Hitachi began R&D on a CMOS annealing machine in 2013, combining quantum annealing principles with CMOS technology to create quantum-inspired computers for combinatorial optimization. In 2018, it partnered with the University of Tokyo to develop a high-speed quantum computer and signed a memorandum with the Riken research institute and a Belgian research organization to develop a silicon-based quantum computer. In 2020, Hitachi started R&D on a silicon quantum computer as part of Japan's Moonshot Research and Development Program, launched by the Cabinet Office. In June 2024, the company developed a new qubit control method that stabilizes and extends qubit lifetimes a hundred-fold. Hitachi offers the CMOS Annealing Cloud Service for quasi-quantum computing, serving enterprises that need optimization solutions across logistics, finance, and industrial applications in Japan and worldwide. In October 2025, Hitachi signed an agreement with RIKEN and imec to develop a silicon-based quantum computer, targeting a prototype by fiscal 2027, and reported 99.1% single-qubit control fidelity on a silicon quantum dot built with natural silicon.
