About

The Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres is Germany's largest scientific organisation, made up of 18 research centres with a combined annual budget of roughly 5 billion euros and more than 43,000 employees. The association coordinates Germany's major quantum computing and quantum technology research through a dedicated Quantum Initiative spanning multiple member centres. Key Helmholtz centres with major quantum programmes include Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ), which hosts the JUNIQ quantum computing platform; the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), developing superconducting qubits and quantum materials; Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), conducting quantum materials research; DESY in Hamburg, contributing to quantum sensing; and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), with quantum sensing and quantum materials activities. The Helmholtz Quantum Center coordinates quantum activities across all member centres under Germany's 3 billion euro national quantum strategy, established in 2021. The association participates in the EU Quantum Flagship and manages Germany's contributions to European quantum computing infrastructure through EuroHPC and the OpenSuperQ European quantum computer initiative. Helmholtz provides access to its quantum computing testbeds through the Helmholtz Quantum Platform (HQP), letting German academic and industrial researchers use gate-based and analogue quantum systems.
