About
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is an executive agency of the UK Ministry of Defence, headquartered at Porton Down in Wiltshire. Dstl conducts classified and open quantum science and technology research focused on defence and national security applications. Key quantum programmes include quantum sensing for navigation, covering positioning, navigation, and timing without GPS, quantum imaging, quantum communication for secure military networks, and quantum computing applications for defence analysis and logistics optimisation. Dstl is a significant funder and commissioner of quantum technology research in the UK, working through EPSRC and Innovate UK channels as well as direct research contracts. It participates in the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme and maintains partnerships with academia, including Oxford, Cambridge, Sussex, and Imperial College, and with industry quantum companies. Dstl's quantum sensing programmes have focused heavily on cold-atom gravimeters and accelerometers for submarine navigation, detection of underground structures, and precision timing systems that operate without satellite infrastructure. Dstl operates the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE), which funds early-stage quantum technology development through small grants, and it participates in NATO quantum technology working groups. Quantum research at Dstl spans the full range from fundamental physics through technology demonstrators to transition into defence procurement. Update 2026-02-20: Dstl supported the development of improved atomic clock technology for UK defence needs. Source: https://quantumzeitgeist.com/dstl-atomic-clocks-clock-resilience/
