About

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world's largest particle physics laboratory and an increasingly active participant in quantum technology research. Located near Geneva on the Swiss-French border, CERN employs over 17,000 scientists and engineers from 113 countries and operates the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a machine that itself depends on quantum physics and superconducting magnet technology. CERN launched its quantum computing programme, the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI), in 2020 to investigate how quantum computing can accelerate particle physics data analysis, simulation of quantum field theories, and optimisation of accelerator operations. CERN has deployed IBM quantum computers for LHC data analysis experiments and participates in quantum simulation programmes with multiple vendors through Amazon Braket and the IBM Quantum Network. The CERN openlab collaborates with technology companies on quantum algorithm development for high-energy physics. CERN's quantum sensing contributions extend to precision measurement of fundamental constants, gravitational wave detector technology transfer, and development of quantum gravimeters for geodesy. CERN's superconducting technology expertise, refined over decades of building superconducting magnets for particle accelerators, applies directly to superconducting qubit development and is being transferred to quantum computing through collaborative programmes with quantum hardware companies. CERN participates in the EU Quantum Flagship and contributes to European quantum technology standardisation. Update 2026-04-02: CERN developed six Timepix chips that are deployed with ADVACAM on NASA’s Artemis II mission to measure radiation exposure.
