About

Capella Space was a US commercial satellite company specializing in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and signals intelligence, and an early developer of space-based optical communication infrastructure. Before its acquisition, Capella was backed by Sequoia Capital and Department of Defense contracts. In July 2025, IonQ completed its acquisition of Capella Space with the goal of building the world's first space-based quantum key distribution (QKD) network. Capella's satellite constellation and optical communications expertise now feed into IonQ's quantum networking strategy, extending quantum-secure communications to space infrastructure.
