About

The AWS Center for Quantum Computing is Amazon Web Services' quantum hardware research facility, located on the Caltech campus in Pasadena, California. Opened in 2021, the centre brings together quantum hardware engineers from Amazon with Caltech researchers to develop next-generation superconducting qubits and build toward fault-tolerant quantum computers. Amazon's quantum hardware strategy focuses on superconducting qubits with improved coherence, novel qubit designs, and integrated classical control electronics. The centre is developing quantum processors intended to eventually power Amazon Braket cloud services with proprietary hardware. AWS is also an active investor in IonQ, one of the first major quantum cloud providers, and maintains partnerships with multiple quantum hardware vendors through Amazon Braket. AWS quantum activities include the Amazon Braket cloud platform, which provides access to IonQ, Rigetti, OQC, QuEra, and other systems, the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab for enterprise quantum application development, and the AWS Quantum Computing Partnership Programme. Amazon's quantum research partnerships include the Daejeon Quantum Technology Cluster in South Korea. The centre collaborates with the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter at Caltech, using its proximity to one of the world's strongest quantum theory groups for hardware-theory collaboration. In February 2025, Amazon unveiled Ocelot, a 5-cat-qubit superconducting chip that uses tantalum oscillators and bosonic encoding. Ocelot claims a 90% reduction in the physical qubits required per logical qubit compared with standard transmon designs and demonstrated a 6x improvement in error suppression. The chip is Amazon's first public prototype toward cat-qubit-based fault-tolerant quantum computing.
