About

Aegiq is a UK-based full-stack photonic quantum computing company spun out from the University of Sheffield in 2019. It develops secure quantum communications using III-V semiconductor-based quantum photonics chips, manufactured with elements such as gallium, indium, and arsenic rather than traditional silicon. Its work builds on more than 20 years of research in semiconductors and quantum science. The company secured 1.4 million pounds in funding from Innovate UK and won a 30 million pound quantum testbed competition funded by the National Quantum Computing Centre to deliver Artemis, its compact photonic quantum computer. Aegiq develops quantum technology for fiber-optic and satellite-based applications, with a dedicated user interface for integration into the NQCC testbed ecosystem. In September 2025, Aegiq commissioned its Artemis photonic quantum computer at the UK NQCC Harwell campus, the first company-owned, on-premises system deployed at a national quantum facility. Artemis uses compound-semiconductor single-photon emitters with silicon-nitride photonic circuits and operates at room temperature. Update 2026-05-20: Aegiq opened its Sheffield headquarters to serve as a center for photonic quantum computing.
