Utilizing explainable AI techniques, specifically SHAP, the model also reveals the environmental factors driving these predictions at each site, allowing managers to identify critical trigger points for emergency action plans, as “This information gives managers an opportunity to identify trigger points in emergency action plans, which can support planning and response decisions,” according to Karp. SHAP Analysis Reveals Key Environmental Stress Drivers Scientists have moved beyond simply forecasting coral heat stress to understanding why it occurs at specific locations, leveraging a new AI model and SHAP analysis. The research team, working with data from 1985–2024, built a prediction tool focused on Florida’s Coral Reef, incorporating atmospheric science, coral ecology, and data science. This system forecasts the onset of moderate heat stress—a key precursor to coral bleaching—up to six weeks in advance, with accuracy generally within one week. The innovation lies in the application of SHAP, which reveals which environmental factors most strongly influence each prediction, varying by reef site and forecast lead time. Surface air temperature consistently emerged as a critical predictor, but other key factors shifted, highlighting the need for localized forecasting.
