Is quantum computer still decades away?

Year 1 student here in computer science, but I am interested in venturing into the field of quantum computing. I chanced upon this post talking about how quantum computers are still far away but yet I have been reading about news every now and then about it breaking encryption schemes, so how accurate is this?
