This year, 83% of holiday shoppers planned to use artificial intelligence to help with their purchases, according to a Zeta Global survey, with nearly three-quarters of respondents saying they trust AI recommendations as much as they trust their own friends. Many of those same shoppers used AI agents to spend $3 billion online in the U.S. on Black Friday and $14.2 billion globally, according to Salesforce data. Recognizing the billions of dollars now flowing through AI bots, retailers are creating their own suite of AI experiences. But the most transformative new technology may be the rise of agentic commerce — personal AI shoppers that find deals, summarize reviews, compare prices and initiate transactions for you. These personal AI shoppers can be especially useful this year as consumer confidence has plunged and prices for common holiday gifts, including electronics and clothing, have soared.
